The showcase home concept was the brain child of Golden eagle log Homes in Wisconsin rapids, Wisconsin. Golden eagle, founded in 1966, grew from a small family business to one that now produces over 100 log homes a year.

The company had been on the lookout for a site for a showcase home that would combine the best of their many log home designs, along with the newest in materials and techniques. The goal was to design a home that was rustic, yet refined, and could be used to educate prospective log homeowners on the design and construction process from start to finish. It all came together when property on lake Petenwell, 30 miles north of Wisconsin dells, became available in 2003. Golden eagle selected a 2.1-acre parcel with 122 feet of frontage on the lake. The Golden eagle team designed and built the 5,500 sq. ft. log home, which includes four bedrooms, five baths, wine cellar, and home theater.

Golden eagle partnered with UW Children's Hospital, located in Madison, to host a series of special events, including home tours and wine and cheese tastings, with all admission proceeds going to the hospital to support its services. UW Children's Hospital provides everything from preventive health care to highly-specialized programs, including pediatric intensive care, an internationally-recognized transplant surgery program, a children's cancer center, and a pediatric asthma center.

Entrez-vous to the foyer and great room

The soaring foyer and great room, with 21-foot ceiling, welcomes you with views of lake and sky. The massive log stairway with log treads climbs toward the loft, and a more conventional stairway with hickory treads goes into the finished basement. Hand-peeled log tie beams and sawtooth stone keep the palette light, yet rustic.

In the great room you'll find a gas fireplace with sawtooth stone veneer and a mayneworkshop.com hand- carved mantle depicting a nautical scene. Rich chocolate leather and tapestry upholstery complement the warm tones in the log walls. The carpet is Shaw, Cabin Craft Soft Impression in Natural. Interior designers Dala Huebner and Jill Livernash from Home Furniture, and Barb Huber from Papa Bear's Northwoods Store designed and furnished the interior spaces throughout the home.

Slicing and dicing was never so easy!

The kitchen features custom-built Bertch (www.bertch.com/bertch_web) brand cabinets in solid alder. An ornate kitchen island is stained in burnished ebony, with 3" butcher block top; the other countertops are granite. The piecrust farm sink, topped with an oil- rubbed bronze Moen (www.moen.com) Vestige faucet, gives you ample room for handling the bulkiest vegetables and cookware. A Subzero stove has an arched decorative wood hood above. Featuring a Shaw Pantheon porcelain tile floor, the dining room and sunny breakfast nook have knotty hickory wood floors.

Relax in style

For relaxation you'll enjoy the corner whirlpool and over-sized walk-in shower. The cabinetry is custom- built knotty pine by Bertch, with a hand-painted Mansfield sink. All the outer walls are full log, while the inside two walls are textured drywall, and the ceiling is knotty pine. The Moen (www.moen.com) faucets are Kingsley with an oil-rubbed finish. Flooring is Shaw Baja tile.

Wine cellar and tasting room

The wine cellar, with a capacity of 450 bottles, allows for ample storage of favorite varieties. A tasting room is spacious enough for wine tasting, socializing and nibbling hors d'oeuvres.

Popcorn anyone?

View movies in this luxury and you'll never want to go to the cinema again. Golden eagle's Theater room has two rows of cushy, elevated custom seating, surround sound, and a high definition, 92" diagonal screen TV. Pine wainscot and pleated velvet wall curtains complete the picture.

Pretend you're a kid again and choose your favorites from the adjoining snack room. M&M's, Kit Kats, Dots and Snickers entice you from behind the glass display case. A popcorn machine and beverage cooler ensure that you'll have everything you need while watching your favorite flicks.
